Personal requirements of sports coaching

Anyone can be a sports coach – as long as he meets certain requirements.

Perhaps the desire to help athletes improve in their game is one of the most important things. However, if all one has is this desire but not other more technical aspects, then being a sports coach may not be for him.

Here are some attributes that a sports coach should have.

  • In-depth knowledge of the sport: he must know the mechanics of the sport – in and out.
  • Eexcellent interpersonal and communication skills: he must be able to communicate well and deal with the athletes.
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of athletes: he must know what athletes need and must be able to point them in the right direction with regards to improvement in the game.
  • Disciplined and patient, yet flexible.

These are only some of the attributes that a sports coach should have. With every situation, there are different needs and requirements.

    Hi
I think this is great and we could well link to it from our website but I would need to have a more generic approach rather than the emphasis that only guys are coaches. All of your comments are about “HE” and this does not send a good message especially when we are already short of the other half of the resource -female coaches.

What do you think. You just need to use the words “They” and “Them”

    Cheers

Yes, you’re right, ‘he’, ’she’, ‘they’, nowdays women are equal to men and are great coach sports. This blog is neutral in its form and doesn’t take side of course.
